In times when environmental concerns become more and more present in our daily lives, some insurance companies are already offering products to meet the necessities of their “green” clients. In New York, environmentally friendly homebuyers are already able to find a company offering green home owners insurance, as Fireman's Fund Insurance Company launched the first policy of this kind in the region. The same company had previously innovated the market by lauching the first green insurance for commercial buildings in the nation. The company is offering the “green” insurance to homeowners who already own green homes or for those who plan to update their properties with green features after a loss, rebuilding a home using environmental safety and efficiency standards. “Already green” clients, however, will be offered a 5% discount on the coverage, which will be applied to the homeowner premium. By using the new coverage, clients will be offered the possibility to rebuild and replace with several environmentally friently solutions, including water-saving plumbing fixtures, atoxic paints and carpeting, environmentally friendly alternatives to refrigerants and fire extinguishing agents, Energy Star-rated heating, air conditioning systems, lighting and eletronic equipments, among other features. The Environmental Defense Fund already recognized the California-based company by its contributions to the environment in a recent report, in which Fireman's Fund was the only insurance company mentioned. In 2006 the company launched its green insurance plans to the commercial marketplace, offering financial incentive for green building owners. Fireman's Fund commercial division has expanded its “green coverage” to include other properties such as hotels, restaurants, manufacturing facilities and others.
